Our Story
Soaring Phoenix was co-founded by two community-rooted leaders deeply committed to disrupting how systemic racism and other forms of injustice impact the daily lives of Black and Brown families, and other marginalized communities. Their vision was shaped by the realities of poverty, housing instability, and inequities in education, particularly in reading and math.
With support from the Regional Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Collaborative and the NJ Department of Children and Families Office of Resilience, Soaring Phoenix partnered with its sister organization, Sage Horizons, to launch a 12-week healing-centered enrichment program for youth in Salem County experiencing homelessness. The goal: to create space for healing, learning, and personal agency.
Activities include martial arts and meditation, chess, nutrition and movement, and creative expression through poetry and journaling—all designed to support mental health, build confidence, and disrupt the lasting impacts of systemic inequity.
What began as a shared vision is now carried forward by Erika Kelley, Co-Founder and Managing Director. She works closely with Diane Cioffi, Strategic Operations and Outreach Director, and trusted community partners to keep Soaring Phoenix rooted in healing, equity, and collective care.
